Tuesday 11th December... we had our auditions for Grease and I think that mine went better than I'd expected. I sang 'can you feel the love tonight' by Elton John from 'Lion king' and Lizzie and I sang a duet of 'elephant love medley' from 'moulin rouge' and also performed a dualogue with Lizzie of Sandy and Danny.
I chose those two songs, well Lizzie and I both agreed on that song because it had a lot of characterizing that could be adjusted into it and the other song I decided because well the lion king is one of my favourite disney films but I haven't seen the musical, although I'd love to! And I found this song suited my voice and characterizing it was quite simple really.
I felt confident in my audition and hope I did well enough to get the role I would prefer.
The Snow Queen performances went incredibly well, the 2nd performance to the year 13's was a little bit more successful than the one to the young ones. I think this was because obviously the older audience could react better and quicker when we interacted with them than the young ones.
Monday 3rd December, we came in at around 5pm to sort out set for the shows... great idea for the princess palace to put balloons on the wooden frame from Polly Lewis, worked well, we did this because there was infact no set ideas for that scene and it just fitted in perfectly with the mood and tone of the play/show. Then at the last minute, Jess and Kim came up with the idea to cut up more flowers and pin them to the black curtain in 'the flower garden' and it did look very good and it was a great act of improvisational brilliance. Also the snow queen's palace had been put up and looked marvellous... lit with blue lights to add the 'icey/cold' effect to create the tone of the scene.
This session proved effective as we didn't really have much done for the set side of the show, and everyone put it vast amounts of ideas and effort into making the set and props.

In our tech production session today, we first started off with some Christmas carolling with Lena as a whole group which was rather fun and got everyone in the mood which was a good way top start the day. I think in doing this it egged us on to work in our tech class with Kim and it helps warm up the brain when working early in the morning.
After this we began finishing the props and parts of set for the snow queen on Tuesday, I attached another branch on to the smaller tree and then spray painted the tree silver to cover up the missing bits. We did this to make the trees look more icey and fit in with the scene of 'the robber girl' and it made it easier than hand painting them with a brush. Bethan made a start on finishing the slay which looked AMAZING! I helped her out a bit by adding newspapers on to the sides which she then spray painted silver. She then put tinsle around the edges of the open of the slay. Max, Emily and I started putting balls of tinsle on the branches of the trees to make it look more sparkly and easy on the eye.
The girls, Sarah, Jess, Lindsey, Abi and Polly all did thier bit in the crafts making more flowers, Sarah and Jess made some icecals to hand from the ceiling. Again this gave our scenes more of an icey/snowy/cold feeling and mood and added more imagination to the audience.
I think today we all made a good effort in getting the props and set done, including Kim with her DIY skills.
Yesterday, 28th November, we went through the play to add the cues for lighting and sound. We went through the first and last lines of each scene to know the cues. This is a rather important aspect to the play because everything must go perfect and the people who are operating the lights have to make their timing right so performers aren't confused on stage. It's the same with the music, as we know, the music in a performance makes the mood different and changes the atmosphere, but if the music cues go wrong then it could make the mood go away from the performers and audience. Before this session we hadn't had much work done on it but I think this helped us and we can go through the play on Monday in rehearsals with the lighting and music to test it.

So today in Lena's lesson, i buddied up with Max and we practised our singing techniques and discussed what we're going to be singing for our first milestone assessment in december, this preparation has really helped me decide what songs i am considering performing foir the assessment.
A few songs I've considered so far are
'I just cant wait to be king' from the film and musical theatre production Lion King.
'Elephant love medley' from Moulin Rouge as a duet with Lizzie.
'Sandy' From Grease

We need to establish a distinct change in atmosphere via lighting and sound for the Snow Queens entrance. The dialogue needs additional detail particularly the benefits of living in the snow palace.

**There has to be a plausible benefit for Kai to go with the SQ as he is fascinated by her before she puts ice in his heart**
  • Snow Queen Music or snow sound effects
  • Additional tempting description of Snow Queen Lifestyle in dialogue

Magic Flower Garden


A playful introduction would improve this scene. Perhaps Gerda could wonder at least for a little while if she should just make new friends whilst being enchanted by the flowers.

**The scene will work best if we feel a bit sorry for the flower witch and the flower girls and if it contrasts more with the other scenes**

  • Demonstrate the girls having fun together before we see the witch
  • Gerda to use '6 senses' to ensure we understand more about the magical garden
  • Find way of making flowers stand!

Snow Queen collects Flower Children


We need this scene to have more clarity. The best way to do this would be to strongly establish an ongoing relationship between the SQ and the Flower Witch.

**This scene is the second time we see the SQ and once again she is abducting children. We have to make her heartless but not too scary!**

  • Reveal Snow Queens bigger plans and the control she has over her magical kingdom
  • Make some reference to life before the Snow Queen's reign
  • Ensure the sleigh can work with two passengers

Palace and the Princess’s Party


This scene needs to have a funny side to it. The King is the centre of the humour.

- King, Queen, Princess and Crow introduced to the audience.
- King is unhappy with Gerda coming through whereas the Princess and Queen welcome her and offer help.

From this scene we'll see the funny side of the story and also as actors we'll test our strengths and weaknesses of keeping in character on stage.

Snow Queen Plots & Plans

This scene needs to have a scary mood but not too scary as they are little kids after all.
- Floor lighting could be of good use here, with just 2/3 lights and the rest of the room dark.
- Slow, scary music.

This scene will show the audience how devious the Snow Queen really is.

Robbers in the Woods



This scene is probably going to humour the audience, it'll be fun for the kids to watch.
- A happy, jolly soundtrack would work well with this scene for when the reindeer first appears.

This is another scene where our strengths and weaknesses will be tested. There are another few comical sections of this scene.

This is going to be quite a cute scene i suppose, with the reindeer and Gerda speaking about how the reindeer eded up in the Robber girl's prison.

MT Chicago

Me and Bethan Cave, performing our street jazz dance, originally meant to be in a group of 4 but the others were abscent. After watching this i realised i had a problem with starring at my partner trying to keep up with her. I now know in the future to try my best to keep my eyes forward and keep in time.
I think we both did our best, Beth was probably better than me but you know! I thought it went well and I've developed my dancing skills and have improved over the first six weeks.

7th November- Chicago Jazz dance 'All that Jazz'
Today we began learning the 'all that jazz' dance from Chicago which we'll be performing in the dance show on the 27th of November. This was our first rehearsal and will be rehearsing it again over the next 3 weeks.

Recap of last term:
We learned about the 6 senses- Sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, mood.
This we learned in the first drama session with Rachel, these 6 senses are essential when performing, allowing the audience to feel the mood of the character or even the scene can draw the audience in and make them feel as if they're there with you.

Using these senses makes you a better performer, and allows you to engage with the audience and creates an atmospheric performance.

On the 25th of September, we were put into different groups and each group had a different story about different cultures around the world. I was paired with Elizabeth and we were performing a story of 'Obatala creates life' this was a story about the gods and how the World was created and life was brought life.
This was part of our story telling assessment and our performance was recorded by camera.
From this I learned a story of which I'd never heard before and found it interesting although found parts funny!

PAA

Performing Arts academy 24/10/12

In previous academy sessions I have created the head costume for the reindeer, i created the antlers from newspapers rolled up into an antler shape and created ears from a grey fabric material scrunched into an ear shape.  I wrapped wire around the newspapers. At first it was difficult trying to bind it round the whole thing but managed it.

I then painted over both the ears and antlers in grey/silver acrylic paint which took a long time to cover, and then smothered them with silver glitter. This was easy due to the fact it stuck to the wet paint, but made a lot of mess :P

Singing session week3

Today we focused on diction.
We used word techniques such as 'red lorry yellow lorry' 'lips teeth tip of  the tongue'.
We used the five vowel sounds 'v e a i o'

I myself lead a vocal warm up, playing the middle C on piano for the girls to hum back and the next lower C for Max and had them sing 'v e a i o'.
After that I also lead a call and response method, the 'Boom chicka rocka chicka boom chicka boom'.

At the end of the session we used Greek words and put them into harmony. Me and Max singing the lower keys and the girls on the higher...Lizzie performed the highest note alone and Jess and Beth performed the next lowest to that.

Week2-
We recapped on what we done the week before. Making sure we hadn't forgot everything we'd learned. We looked through the booklet again briefly.

We done our warm ups, rolling heads, shaking hands. We done diaphragmatic breathing and began humming to notes played from the piano.
Being one of two boys in my group we kept going higher with the girls, but we were trying to keep low.

This exercise was testing our flexibility and range...Our voice was covering peggios. 

We each had to do a recording of us just singing back notes to Lena on piano.
We then done some blues piano work reminding ourselves of all the keys on piano.

Also we learned different ways of preparing your body to sing.
-Feet spread apart, about a foot and a half. Hands down by your side, give them a little shake for 5 seconds. Then slowly rotate your head once and then stop in the centre and head slightly titled up, chin up, shoulders back.

We learned about diaphragmatic breathing. Breathing in for 1,2,3,4...Hole 1,2,3,4...and out for as long as possible until you can't push any more out.
A good time to practice diaphragmatic breathing is when lying down, because it can cause you to go light headed.
